How to dance like superman : 11.5 Dance secrets for a bachata dancer leader
How to be a good leader in bachata? I show you a method and tips to feel & perform better. It is not easy to dance bachata. It is not easy to lead a girl on the dance floor mainly when you start learning dancing bachata. Imagine yourself in a Bachata club for the first time: the music is loud, fantastic energy and everyone is dressed in a fashionable mode. Yea poor modern society…As you walk in, you approach the bachata dance floor. You are now introduced to the universe of bachata. You stare at the dancers, you see them dancing, executing all these amazing turns; how they dance with passion, the sexiness, and then again, the waves and turns! The never-ending, sensual wave!! Sounds like your experience?
It was definitely mine, so right away I knew I had to learn how to dance. And believe me i had so many limiting believes so little self confidence with a girl and even less with a female dancer. Once I started dancing, the better I saw myself dancing, the more I noticed that some girls did not enjoy dancing with me.
Why? After all I was doing all the turns and dips, the sexy patterns, the fun stuff – you know, the works Damn, it was not enough. They were still looking around to get another guy for the next song.It was only after some time that I truly learned what makes a guy a great dancer. Indeed, a real bachatero is not just a dancer, hehas to be a “Matematician” and “Psychologist” on the dance floor.
This aspect alone is very general, but it opens the gate to help you understand dancing in a new way. Leading is the key to being a great dancer. Write it down and post it on your facebook wall: “Leading is the key to be a great male dancer”.
Let’s dive in to see how you can improve the way you play your role on the dance floor as a leader.
LEADING VS. MAKING.
Most of the girls will be familiar with guys making you do the waves and combinations. When you go home after a night of bachata dancing, you feel that your whole body is sore as if you were beaten by a gang of wild animals. Boys! Lead as if you were showing the way, not as if you were making her play catch up. Its ok to be masculine and firm, guys, but not rough. There is a line between those two concepts and believe me, its not a fine one. There is a big difference when it comes down to “making” versus “leading”. Want to know what kind of lead you are? Do a survey among the girls you dance with. They will be happy to tell you. And you can be surprised. Organize a confessions night and i ensure you wont regret it. Plan it in your agenda now otherwize you will forget it.
But just before, share this wonderful article, they need to know what are you talking about 😛
This one kills me: the guy places the hand up and somehow, by magic, he expects the girl to turn or to wave or to wave turning xD . What king of dance instructor teaches this concept to his students? Every move has to be unique guys. Which means that every move has to be led in a specific way. Like a painter painting a unique portrait. Pause 1s, stop reading and think about it please. Connect it to your own experience.
Done? Great. If you want to move a chair from point A to B, you have to make it happen right? So lead as if you were making the turn happen. But remember: “guide” vs. “make”. Be assertive in your moves as if she were to close her eyes and still be able to follow you.
SHE LIVES IN A PRESENT MOMENT BUT YOU MUST PLAN THE FUTURE
Boys, boys, boys! You need to know the step you are going to lead 5s before executing it please not in the moment you want to lead it. Understand? We ask you to prepare the step before to prevent from having any misunderstanding. Prepare the conditions of your leading. You prepare a step and then execute it. A tip for that, between your combinations have some “transition steps” like basic steps to “pause” the dance and let you think calmly about your next combination and let the girl…breath.
You are a scientist, a memory center, you are not just a dancer when you dance…
For the girl you know it is different, she is entirely in the present moment. If you see a girl anticipating, it means that she is not in the present moment and do not get the signal and indication from the leader. if it happens please, comfort her 😉
PUT YOURSELF IN HER SHOES.
Boys, boys, boys!! You are not just a scientist, you are also a psychologist of dance. If she is falling after the same turn patterns, or she feels uncomfortable with some of your moves, then don’t do them. Try combinations and moves that help the girl feel more comfortable, and that are at her level of dancing. Always adapt to the female, without expecting her to adapt to you. Its funny to see some bachateros doing the same endless waves or turns until the girl is falling down. If she is loosing her balance, don’t keep going on and on.
“IMPROVE YOUR LEAD” VS “SHE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO FOLLOW”.
Changing this perspective will help you see opportunities to be better at leading. Often times, I hear boys make comments like: “I dont like dancing with her, she can’t follow.” Instead why dont you say to yourself: “What can I do to improve my lead in this particular move, so that she can follow it next time?” After all you want to improve as a lead right? Then start by working on yourself. Thinking this way helps you be the guy who can lead everybody. And ladies will enjoy dancing with you because of that.
Yes or yes? Now pause and connect this situation with your personal dance experience and promise to follow it from today, yes? Talk to the girls around you please.
BE CLOSER TO HER.
Let me put it in other words: be within reach. Dance at a distance that will make it easy for you as a lead so you don’t have to be running after her. I suggest a one-foot distance between your body and hers as you dance. You will feel more in control and this will help her feel your lead. The more you are far, the more your dance is out of control. The more you are closer, without exaggeration, the more you control your dance. In addition to this, don’t over extend your arms when you dance, especially in your open breaks. This creates extra distance between you and your partner, making it hard to reach or lead the next move.
BE IN TUNE WITH THE WAY HER BODY FEELS AS SHE DANCES.
Pay attention to how she feels, her movement, her momentum, her resistance, her body language, her distance, and her styling. You will be able to place combinations and moves that flow and fit the moment versus placing moves or combos for the sake of the move. Pay attention of the moment of the party or congress night. Why? Adapt your energy and combination with the moment and the energy of the woman.
Dance different at the beginning, middle, end of the party please.
Now pause 1s, stop reading and connect it with your bachata dance experience.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE MUSIC.
If you dont, you are just going through the motion – you are not dancing. Remember that we dance to the music, and so does the girl. You will also be able to coordinate your moves better, and trust me, your dancing will improve dramatically.
The famous big word “Musicality” haha. It makes you scare yes? me too… 😀 But i have learnt from girls that they prefer a musical bachatero than a “youtube dancer” who dances all what he knows without caring of the music and the instruments playing.
LEARN HOW TO BE AN EFFICIENT LEAD & THEN APPLY STYLING.
Many bachateros out there get so into the moves and styling that they end up forgetting about leading the girl, or end up confusing her. Sometimes styling can interfere with the girls’ following, so be aware of it. Assertive leading helps you be in tune with your dance partner.
Pause 1s and think about it. Do you dance with yourself or with a girl? Do you think you dance 100% for the girl or not? Do you feel in tune with the people you dance with or are you just dancing with yourself?
Learn other bachata styles: It improves your bachata dance. Are you alread a Master in Bachata? Bravo if it is your case…! Not your case? Not to worry! We can all improve and learn new things, even as an advanced dancer I will always continue learning. Take some privates, work on your technique and try learning a new style.
LEARN HOW TO FOLLOW.
The first time i saw a man be the follower and the girl the leader i said “WTF” !!!!! then i realised why.. and since then i have been teaching my students to switch roles. Why? First to show to the men that it is not easy to be a follower. So that we have more respect for the followers.
Actually, this is the best thing you could do, if you are really serious about dancing. Do you really want to be exceptionally good at leading? Then practice following. Take your dancing to the next level and understand dancing from the followers’ perspective. True leaders know how followers feel. What better way to know than by being one?All these little tips will help you get there as a great leader. And always remember: when it comes down to being a successful dancer, the stronger the foundations, the better you will be able to build upon them.
