“Visualization in dance is your first step”
Proper visual imagery techniques can improve how you feel and how you perform.
Mental training: the power of Visualisation.
If you take a look around, you will see nothing human-made that did not first exist as an image in someone’s mind. It is impossible to create something that cannot first be imagined. Psychologists have been using visual imagery for years. In other words, being able to do something in your head, greatly increase your chances of being able to do it in real life.
Your brain is constantly using visualization in the process of simulating future experiences, but this process happens so naturally that you generally aren’t even aware of it, the same way you usually aren’t aware that you are breathing. If you aren’t aware of it then you aren’t actively directing the process. You can learn to use visualization to actively create future simulations that can help you improve goals that you set for yourself.
Picture and Describe
The more details you have in a visualization the more real it will seem, and the more it will increase performance as the brain starts to develop neural connections that result from the repeated visual image along with enhancing motivation which increases the likelihood of taking an action toward your goal.
The best way to create detail and enhance the quality of your simulation is to picture and describe it using all of your senses. Keep adding in more detail until the process starts to feel as real as if you were actually experiencing it.
Emotion is a type of sensory based representation in the brain. Because we know from the world of cognitive therapy that emotion is preceded by thought, when you feel something deeply, you have achieved a level of belief associated with it.
However, the more real or true you believe something to be, the more emotional impact it has on you. To really enhance a simulation you want to create as much detail around it as you can, so that you begin to feel the experience of it, as if it were real. Once you have begun to feel it, you have crossed the threshold that leads to action.
Sometimes in order to create a more detailed and realistic visual simulation in your mind, you have to expose yourself to more detail in the outside world. For example, if you really dream of doing something you’ve never tried before like making a world dance tour, you may have a difficult time simulating a detailed experience, since you don’t have much to draw on. You will need to expose yourself to the experience of world dance tour. You may need to read books, watch videos, visit a world dance tour communities, or talk to other people who have world dance tour experience.
Great dancers see the dance in their heads
Anybody can visualize their own dancing with some practice. When you are around excellent dancers during practice time, you will see them rehearsing a sequence in their head, similar to “marking it” where you practice a routine without doing it full out. It is comon to see athletes and performers running their game plan in their head just before an important event.
As a dancer, I am working the similar process for dancing and it is obvious to me that the better dancers are seeing the dance in their head. The music’s playing and they close their eyes and watch the dance in their mind. They take small or minimal steps, sometimes turning and making smaller movements but clearly dancing in their head as if they were dancing full out.
“What about you?”
Have you closed your eyes and imagined an exercice or dance move in your mind? If you have never tried it, start with music playing, a style you love and imagine yourself dancing. Once that works, try it with both the music and dance in your mind. it is one of the practising “secrets” of the most experienced dancers.
If you are a partner dancer, try to leading or following a dance movement or a comon step from your favorite style. See yourself working simple moves and some fondational footwork. If you are the lead, try working a few more complicated sequences in your head. Feel free to slow down them down if appropriate, seeing the details in your minds eye. You can practice the latest moves from your class by the way.
Start the process today and try doing a basic move in your head. Play some music, it helps. Over time, you will learn faster than you did in the past, partially because you can practice more.
You can also replace some physical practice with the mental practice. And when it is done well, it can lead to effective results. See yourself in your dance world. See yourself doing basic and try imagining the steps in your head. The more senses your engage the better. The more you practice in your mind, the better you get at it.
You can practice dancing anyplace in your head when you have a sliver of quiet time. You do not need a large dance studio, your bathroom is large enough to make this happen. Avoid doing it while driving, on a first date or taking extra strenght drugs hehe. otherwize, anyplace is fair game.
Visualization in bachata: Hints & Tips
A couple hints you should consider:
⦁ The more realistic you make it in your mind’s eye, the better.
⦁ Start simply by doing simple footwork or movements and build from there.
⦁ See yourself dancing with someone and enjoy if you are partner dancing.
⦁ Hear the music in your head as you practice the movements.
⦁ Feel free to slow the music down, doing each steps perfectly, or correcting yourself if you make mistake.
⦁ Try the same moves at different speeds, ranging from painfull slow to blistering fast.
⦁ Focus on the good feelings:One more thing that will help you stay calm is to keep focus on positive things, whatever they are. Don’t let negative self talk ruin the whole process.
⦁ Stay calm: Before starting visualization, I first needed to be in the mood for that. So, a few deep breaths helped me lay out the foundation for imagining my goal. Then, I would play my favorite bachata and I would “teleport” to the dance floor.
⦁ Find your time: I visualize before a dance class, a congress or a dance party because that way my dance experience starts with positive energy and optimism.

Don’t Rely Solely On Visualization
Social dancing is for fun and many of us genrate our own self pressure to the better. If you want to advance a faster and make more progress in less time, , the visualization techniques used by experienced dancers, Olympic athletes and advanced musicians provide interesting models for dancers.
We love finding easy ways to do something. Thus, some people think that visualization only is enough to bring the results.
However, it’s NOT a replacement for real work. Even though this method is indeed powerful, visualization without actual practice won’t bring results. While mental imagery can help you perfect your technique, choreography, and gain confidence, you still need to work hard and practice consistently.
But, when these two are combined, they can bring remarkable results.
